In June 2012 Buckley returned to South Africa, signing for Maritzburg United after an 18-year career overseas.

This season he has been an inspiration for The Team of Choice, scoring twice in a shock win over Mamelodi Sundowns, and winning numerous man of the match awards.

His form culminated in a surprise recall to the Bafana squad in October, and he made a return to team in the Nelson Mandela Challenge against Zambia.

Buckley represented his country at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups and the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations. He has scored 10 goals for South Africa.
