Abou Diaby joined Auxerre in 2003 from Paris Saint-Germain and was part of the side that won the national Under-16 championship. After playing in 10 first team games for Auxerre between 2003 and 2006, Diaby signed for Arsenal, turning down a chance to join London rivals Chelsea.

Diaby made his Arsenal debut as a substitute in January 2006 against Everton, and scored his first goal for the club against Aston Villa on 1 April.

However, just one month later he suffered a broken and dislocated ankle after a reckless two-footed challenge by Sunderland's Dan Smith. As a result of the injury, Diaby missed the 2006 UEFA Champions League final against Barcelona.

But after an eight month absence, he returned to action in January 2007, appearing as a substitute in the League Cup quarter-final against Liverpool.,/p>

Diaby has since established himself in the centre of midfield after the departures of Mathieu Flamini and Gilberto.
