Pienaar was a squad member at the 2002 World Cup finals but did not play, while knee injuries ruled him out of the 2004 African Nations Cup finals in Tunisia and the 2006 finals in Egypt.

He helped Ajax win the Dutch League and Cup in 2002 and won the League title again in 2004. He also played in the 2002/03 Uefa Champions League, where he scored in the quarter-final against AC Milan.

He moved at the end of his contract to Borussia Dortmund in June 2006, but after an unhappy season moved again, this time on loan for a season to Everton in July 2007. He signed permanently one season later.

He was a revelation at Goodison Park and was named Player of the Season for the 2009/10 campaign, in which he showed his versatility in being able to play on the right or left of midfield, or as a playmaker behind the strikers.
