He spent just one season in top-flight football in South Africa, with Benoni Premier United (now Thanda Royal Zulu), before making the move overseas to Israeli club Maccabi Haifa.

Masilela's international career was ultimately hampered by injury, and he returned in 2012 to join Kaizer Chiefs.

The 27-year-old made his international debut in 2006, and participated in the 2006 and 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, 2009 Confederations Cup and 2010 World Cup.

He was of Bafana’s better performers at the Confederations Cup, and was named in the Team of the Tournament.
