Masilela was the first player from a team below the Premiership in South Africa to be selected to play for the country in a tournament when he was chosen for the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

He spent just one season in top-flight football in South Africa, with Benoni Premier United (now Thanda Royal Zulu), before making the move overseas to Israeli club Maccabi Haifa.

Masilela, who has featured at three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments as well as at the 2010 World Cup, impressed overseas, notably on a loan spell with Getafe, but injuries played a role in him returning home in 2012, to join Kaizer Chiefs.

He has established himself as a regular for both club and country, and earned his 50th cap for the national side in a 2-1 friendly loss to Zimbabwe on September 10, 2013.
