Alvaro Arbeloa joined Real Madrid as a teenager, where he played under youth coach Rafael Benitez.

In July 2006 the defender signed for Deportivo la Coruna, where he hoped to gain more first-team experience. He joined Liverpool shortly after this in January 2007, making his debut on February 10 against Newcastle United, and scoring his first goal against Reading on April 7, 2007.

Before the start of the 2009/10 season, with his contract running out and with the imminent arrival of England fullback Glen Johnson, he left the Reds to rejoin Real Madrid, where he has been a regular.

Arbeloa earned his first cap for Spain in March 2008 when he came on with 15 minutes to go in a friendly victory over world champions Italy. He was a member of Spain’s victorious Euro 2008 squad, although he started just one game in the tournament, against Greece.
