Liberty in Wafu on merit

Liberty in Wafu on merit

The Ghana Football Association say Liberty Professionals’ participation in the revamped West African Football Association club championships was not based on this year's League standings.

The Dansoman-based side are in Nigeria for the first stage of the competition, which has sparked a mini-controversy given that they barely avoided relegation.

King Faisal owner Alhajo Grunsah, whose club finished fourth, has accused the football association of favouritism and is calling for a probe into the incident.

But GFA boss Kwesi Nyantekyie says the reaction to Liberty's participation runs contrary to the facts.

“Liberty entered that competition on the basis of their finish last season. The start of this competition was postponed, so Liberty are not playing in the Wafu handpicked by the GFA,” he told KickOffGhana.com.

“The draw for this competition has been made way back and the Ghana League only finished last Sunday, so there is no connection between the placements and Liberty's participation.”
