Derby Player Ratings

Posted: 2009-07-23 23:22

KICK OFF rates the players’ performances in the Vodacom Challenge Soweto Derby on Thursday night.

ORLANDO PIRATES
*8 Moeneeb Josephs – A confident display, including good saves from Musona’s drive and Masango’s curler. Solid throughout.
7 Rooi Mahamutsa – Sure in the tackle and confident in his passing. Growing in maturity all the time.
5 Lehlohonolo Seema – Struggles a bit in the first half as Chiefs put pressure on Bucs’ defence line.
6 Lucas Thwala – Makes some solid tackles with careful timing.
5 Innocent Mdledle – After his struggles with injury it is always going to be tough for him and he looks off the pace.
7 Dikgang Mabalane – Busy throughout, testing Chiefs’ defence as much as he can.
4 Blaise Kiaku – An over-the-top tackle followed by a bone cruncher that sends Letsholonyane off on a stretcher sums up an awful night for the Congolese.
7 Josephy Kamwendo – Started slowly, but after his well-taken goal is more influential.
6 Phenyo Mongala – Lively when on the ball, but not overly influential.
6 Katlego Mashego – Having just returned from holiday, he understandably looks very rusty. But his pass does create the goal.
5 Ndumiso Mabena – Doesn’t strike up a combination with Mashego, but he is new and still finding his feet.
6 Lucky Lekgwathi – Replaces Mdledle at half-time and is committed and full of running.
6 Siphelele Mthembu – Comes on for Mabena at the break and fights hard, but no clear opportunities.
6 Teko Modise – Comes on for Mongala and gets involved, but not a huge impact made.
5 Oupa Manyisa – Picks up from where Kamwendo left off, but does not have the same impact.
Bennett Chenene – More lively than the man he replaces, Mashego
Benson Mhlongo – On for Kiaku too late for a rating.

KAIZER CHIEFS
7 Itumeleng Khune – Confident as usual, but shows an improvement in catching crosses and delays his distribution at times when needed.
6 Tlou Molekwane – A decent showing by the young fullback.
5 Thomas Sweswe – Stable, but not totally at ease with the Pirates attack. Bucs’ goal carves open the centreback pairing.
6 Jeffrey Ntuka – Very strong in the tackle and committed throughout.
7 Punch Masenamela – Looking more and more composed as his career grows.
*8 Mandla Masango – Great touches, intelligent passes and runs and some good attempts at goal.
7 Tinashe Nengomasha – Dominates in the fight for possession battle and gets his team going on the attack.
5 David Mathebula – Not his best performance, but is helped by Nengomasha behind him and the wide midfielders.
6 Abia Nale – Sets up Dladla’s opener after nine minutes and is very lively, but at times a bit slow to release the ball.
7 Josta Dladla – Good performance by a man who looks free to enjoy his game on he night. Takes his goal well.
5 Knowledge Musona – Barring one decent attempt at goal and a few good runs, he shows he needs more time to settle.
Reneilwe Letsholonyane – On for Mathebula at the break, but a shocking tackle from Kiaku ends his night. No rating.
5 Gerald Sibeko – Comes on for Letsholonyane, but is wasteful with his passes and a bit off the pace of the game.
6 Jose Torrealba – Can’t link up effectively with Nale and Dladla who form some deadly combinations, but does his best to bring them into the game.
6 Thabang Rooi – Replaces Sweswe and does a decent job.
Arthur Zwane – On for Masango with just two minutes left. No rating.

4 Blaise Kiaku – An over-the-top tackle followed by a bone cruncher that sends Letsholonyane off on a stretcher sums up an awful night for the Congolese.

This is the player that was signed without even being assessed by the coach. I feel sorry for Pirates they always get it wrong. Flop after flop

It is preseason, player were committed, not at their best mostly bcos they are not up there yet concerning match fit..,Blaise Kiaku, if that not how he plays soccer, then he tried too much, if it is how he plays it then, pirates are in for it, I see a lot of reds cards, yellow cards given to him....Josephs a good goalkeeper, I will luv to see how he copes with penalties without making a lot of noise...

I think Josephs must be considered for Bafana Bafana,,,he's confident, has experienced, passionate about the game,,,,Masango deserves those ratings,,,,not sure about Mabalane and Punch both getting 7 points (doesn't make sense)...Innocent Mdledle and Mashego (maybe they should have played,,,rusty: this is really a full-time job,,few weeks on break can do such damage to their performances,,,,MR EDITOR,,,,what is that Mr Referrer saying about the penalty,,,we also need those articles,,,pride was at stake yesterday...

Thabang [The KHOSI One]: 2009-07-24 08:40

WIN is always sweet no matter how big or how it comes about. Well done to my CHIEFS, this was a confident booster. JD seems to have a new role to play. He looks quite deadly combined with Nale, The General & Masango. However I still say the following players MUST leave Naturena ASAP.

Torrelba – Has NEVER made his mark since his arrival, especially after that noisy transfer.
Sibeko – He is the longest player now that Mooki has retired but he doesn’t improve & I don’t see this changing looking at his age, he must go period.
Bulu – Not PSL Material can’t say more about this guy.
Nhleko – Good but not a CHIEFS material. Must open up space 4 a top striker.
Ntuka – Doesn’t look confident on the ball, very error prone especially under pressure. We have depth in MOLEKWANE, MASENAMELA, ROOI, MmBOOI, SWESWE, NAYAHO, ISAACS, TAU, MATLE, etc.
I also wanted JD to leave but I withdraw that thought, he’s looks very good in that new centre forward

Thabang [The KHOSI One]: 2009-07-24 08:44

Next time Vlads must try The Genral - Yende Combination. We have see enough of The General - DVD.

Thabang [The KHOSI One]: 2009-07-24 08:48

Mashego doesn’t deserve that 6, he looked uninterested and half the time arrogant. That’s why he substituted only be substituted. Pirates are still going to cause lots of trouble this season. As for my team I prefer the underdogs tag. Khosi4Life

Mr Writer, I agree with you 100%. Mandla Masango is the man of the match. But there is a room for improvement. He needs to work on his marking skill. He has all the best qualities to make him one of the greatest players this continent has ever produced. If he can get proper guidance on and off field. European big guns will fight for his signature.

Who the heck is this Blaise Kiaku? Pirates keep bringing us people that will take our PSL players careers. Only if it was not Vodacom...that man should be banned from this game for a while and if he commit similar offence he should be send back home. I hate rough tackles and can't stand the sight of anyone [local or foreign] that do it.

Soccer Critic ( Tivani): 2009-07-24 09:21

You know what I said this before and i say it again PIRATE is a useless team ever in this world. They always talk to much and fail. They always start well and failat the end. they beat Man City GOOd but does that counts?? They dont understand why Man City only featured youngsters in their game. Its becos they knew that the important game is on Sunday. For Pirate they did not know that thier vital game is The Derby which is a road to final. POOR decision making by pirate technical team. They also have stupid fans ever. these people they talk to much and they dont wanna come to real sense and face the facts. IF Pirates continue with this philosophy they will never win any trophy this in the coming ten years except for charity cup.

I think it would be interesting if Referees could be interviewed after matches, not even after matches, Kick off can interview them and post articles. I would love to find out what is going on in their heads, what answers do they have to controversial decisions made at games of this magnitude, after all they are people. Mr Editor I think its time Kickoff brings us the referee's point of views and post match interviews.

Katlego : 2009-07-24 09:35

Dont agree with the ratings given to molekwane and ntuka,i think it would have been fair to give them ratings of 7 & 8 repectively.

Paul maake : 2009-07-24 09:36

Yeah i thnk thy r fair nd acurate, wel done to the makhosi coach

Inno: 2009-07-24 09:57

Mr Editor is that ref Mr Jerome a pirates fan, i bet he is, judging by his referring?

Ole(The Guru): 2009-07-24 10:12

Chiefs played well yesterday but the must get rid of Mathebula he is not adding value to the team.

Khulekani: 2009-07-24 10:36

Bucs is a formidable side but I think arrogance killed them. They won the game in their mind before the start.Congrats Chiefs.I still maintain that I can see a direction from the Chiefs coach but it will take months for them to be formidable like Pirates.

Overall perfomance from yesterday Pirates were step ahead and would have won the game if Seema,Mashego and Mdledle were not playing.

I am a Bucs for life but again congrats Chiefs for showing my team that respect in this game is needed....

Bongani: 2009-07-24 10:49

Dladla was so marvel to watch...his passing, spacing, runs, and his goal. it was world class. he must always be allowed to play in the middle like last night

KaMashobana: 2009-07-24 11:18

New in his job, the chiefs coach has already picked up that Dladla is the worst ball crosser, hence playing in the middle.8/10 coach!! Mashego cost pirates the game. Chenene & Mabalane how do miss from the spot twice.Josephs is just a clown, should play for Generations or Umzi wezinsizwa.Pirates coach hw do you field a player who came from honey-moon the previous day(Mhlongo). Have you ever been to honey moon? Akudlalwa phaya.

eemz-kokstad : 2009-07-24 11:21

was overly impresd by masango althoug im a BUCCUNEER

Aldair : 2009-07-24 11:24

Nt fair coz mathebula is bttr than tht overrated TEKO

katlego: 2009-07-24 11:24

dladla also plaed well last night, but all in all the guys proved the critics wrong with a gud display of futball to get past bucs to meet the blues in the final mo tshwane 2morow

Mookamedi: 2009-07-24 11:52

how the hell do you award Mashego a rating of 6!!!

Thiefs played realy well as a team, attacking & defending as team and closing down spaces quickly to leave no room for Pierats ball players in Mabalane,Mongala or Teko.
anyway here is there rating folks:
Josephs(8)commanded his area well and made crucial saves to keep pierats in the game.needs to be steady though
R.Mahamutsa(6)a good defender on the day although gave away possesion easily whilst trying to distribute
L.Seema(5)once again the captain was suspect in defence and struggled to deal with tricky chiefs attackers
I.Mdledle(3)instead played against his own team by giving away ***** cheaply..the bafana star is still on holiday
J.Kamwendo(6)struggled to cope with fast paced tempo of the game and failed to win possesion and was casual in making a simple pass
D.Mabalane(5)was total ineffective on the left and right side of play and never crossed even a single ball into the box.chiefs gave him no space to play the ball, should have been replaced
P.Mongala(6)looked livelier on the ball although seemed not to want to risk making mistakes by not holding onto the ball when necessary thus hindering him to show what he knows best.
N.Mabena(4)the youngman was not convincing in attack,he didnt threaten chiefs defence one bit
K.Mashego(4)The man they call Mahoota should have been replaced in the first 15 Minutes.dumpened all Pierats effrots in attack by stoping to allow chiefs to regroup.seemed not interested
Modise(4)never or was ever going to make a difference..had no room to play the ball, his attitude of regarding himself as star player was putting him under pressure yet he's an average pressure.

Mookamedi: 2009-07-24 12:08

The Vodacom Challenge is over for Orlando Pirates.
Pirates to decide on D.MASINA, P.MONGALA, E. WALAZA

who do you suggest they should sign or let go?

Jacob/Styles: 2009-07-24 12:31

For sure i have enjoyed the derby and fully agree with the ratings, however i refrain from reading too much into these pre-season games as they are preparatory games. Chiefs is on the right track though, it seems this coach is reviving Amakhosi yesternight they displayed hunger, passion and style.

Pirates was not outplayed yet i witnessed what i think Mashego, Mdledle, Mhlongo and Modise still need some game time. That Kiaku guy needs to be careful, if not warned he will cause unnecessary penalties and red cards. I admire the strategy Ruud employs, which allows new players to play these games in pre-season as the real business is coming the team needs quality. Do not forget Chiefs played the final of the Vodacom last year and performed inconsistantly in the League. All i'm saying pre-season games may be misleading. Viva Bhakajuju!
