Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has been receiving a few tips on South African football from former Jomo Cosmos striker Benjani Mwaruwari.
The Zimbabwean, who is part of the City squad in Mzansi for the 2009 Vodacom Challenge and, according to executive chairman Garry Cook, has been telling Hughes a thing or two about the PSL.
“We have got a relatively new team having brought it in a lot of new players over the past 12 months, so they need to get used to each other as many haven’t played together except in training,” Cook says.
“Benjani has shared some insights with the manager [Mark Hughes] on South African football and hopefully that will help us to beat Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. I doubt it will be enough though!”
One new signing, Gareth Barry, has hit back at suggestions by Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez that he only joined The Citizens for the money.
“Manchester City agreed a fee with Aston Villa and once I had spoken to the manager and saw the ambition of the club, my mind was made up,” Barry says.
“People can talk about the money, but when you look at the quality of the players that the club is signing, it is clear that this is a team going places.”
