Chiefs slip against Leopards

Posted: 22 December 2007 Time: 22:38

Kaizer Chiefs drew their ninth out of 15 Absa Premiership games when Black Leopards held them to a 1-1 draw at the Loftus Stadium on Saturday night.

Siphiwe Tshabalala netted for Chiefs in the 14th minute and Robert Ng'ambi got the equaliser for Leopards in the 72nd.

Mandla Masango mesmerised the Leopards defence and then played an inch-perfect cross to the far post which Tshabalala rammed home with his head. The Chiefs faithful were delighted and their team turned on the style, but it was not long before Leopards had them pinned in their own half.

Leopards' industrious midfielder Fischer Kondowe missed a glorious chance from a Luvhengo Mungomeni cross just after the half-hour mark.

Leopards' winger Christopher Netshidzivhe and playmaker Jabulani Maluleke also gave Chiefs defenders a torrid time on the flanks, but Itumeleng Khune snatched their crosses easily as his backline struggled to contain them.

As the half came to an end Leopards pressed hard but could not get the equaliser despite commanding the game.

Leopards continued to press on in the second half but mistimed shots and glaring misses let them down.

But Leopards played a meticulous passing game that Chiefs could not match and when they got forward through the assistance of former Amakhosi striker Sibusiso Dlamini, Chiefs backline watched as he helped set-up the equaliser.

Dlamini held off Fabian McCarthy, slipped a pass to Peter Mponda, who dissected the hosts with a pass that Ng’ambi expected as he casually stroked home.

Suddenly Chiefs attacked with more vigour but Leopards defence was calm under pressure and thwarted their routes to goal. Kondowe at the other end was still wasteful as he blew two more chances and Netshidzivhe too shot wide to save Chiefs from another loss.
