AmaZulu coach Cavin Johnson targets all available points for top eight finish

Posted: 12 March 2019 Time: 13:53

AmaZulu were too good for Bidvest Wits on Saturday, winning 2-0 at King Zwelithini Stadium to relieve the pressure that was starting to cause negative thoughts.

Usuthu supporters levelled allegations against the team in the last two weeks after a series of poor results but three points secured against Wits has taken them six points above the relegation zone for some breathing space.

Coach Cavin Johnson was was asked after the game whether the win would make any difference to supporters who reportedly had grievances and accused him of favouritism.

"I'm not really worried, football is a beautiful game, lots of people have different emotions," he said.

"You win or lose some people won't like you, it's how you've been taught as an individual to know the game. If you understand the game from the streets, you will be like the streets.

"This game was about getting a win for positivity after our back-to-back losses, we needed it to get out of that position."

Johnson felt his side did well to press Wits and not allow them to play, and singled out the performance of Somila Ntsundwane, who registered two assists.

"Our plan was to press them as high as we can and we did that, it worked out. Ntsundwane has been doing well on training, it's just that he was not getting an opportunity because we have so many quality players in the team. I'm hoping this performance won't get to him," he added.

With seven league matches left, Johnson was asked how many points he is targeting to qualify for the top eight.

"We need all the points in our remaining games," he said. "It's a very different season for us, it's about getting as many as we can. If the football gods give us top eight, so be it."
