Orlando Pirates' Wayne Sandilands reflects on penalty save and performance against FC Platinum

Posted: 12 March 2019 Time: 19:30

Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands has explained how he managed to save the penalty against FC Platinum but rued the two goals he later went on to concede.

Sandilands was in hind-sight the real hero that allowed Pirates to salvage a point from their last CAF Champions League group clash at home to Zimbabwe’s FC Platinum.

Though he failed to keep a clean sheet on the night, the 35-year-old denied the visitors an opening goal with a brilliant dive to his right to deny Never Tigere from 12 yards out in the 19thminute.

That save would go on to prove decisive as The Buccaneers went on to earn a 2-2 draw by the end of the night, and the veteran shotstopper admits it was pure faith that he managed to go in the correct direction.

“No [I didn’t know which way the penalty was going] … By God’s grace, I just happened to go the right way, so I was fortunate with that,” Sandilands admits to KickOff.com.

“But you know after making a save like that, you’d want to just continue but it’s obviously a bit disappointing to have gone on to concede two goals from there.”

The former Champions League winner with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016 further stresses the importance of the draw ahead of their final group clash against Horoya this weekend.

“But let’s say the point at least help us keep the competition alive for us. I think it would have been really, really hard for is if the game ended in a defeat – the last game would have been a dead rubber,” he says.

“That would just have been a mental killer, to go all that way and know that there’s nothing to play for, so we’re quite grateful that the point at least kept us in contention.”
