Orlando Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic has labelled their upcoming CAF Champions League clash against Horoya “an early final” given what is at stake.
Pirates face a do-or-die encounter in their final Group B fixture away to the Guinean giants on Saturday afternoon, with a place in the quarterfinals up for grabs for both sides.
The Buccaneers slipped up in their previous encounter at home to bottom-of-the group FC Platinum last Saturday, and now have it all to do in Conakry this weekend despite having started the campaign on a high as they topped to standings after three rounds of fixtures.
Nonetheless, Sredojevic is adamant they will rise to the occasion with the knowledge that only one outcome would be enough for them to advance, rather than having to calculate permutations.
“I must say we started [the campaign] very well until the fourth match [against Esperance] when we went to Tunisia, and we started the last game [against Platinum] with a mad desire to win, but you know football is not a walk in the park,” said Micho.
“We wanted to win and wanted the three points that would guarantee us passage to the next round of the competition, needing only a draw against Horoya.
“But in the same moment, it’s an early CAF Champions League final for Orlando Pirates, which will be played at the 28 September Stadium in Conakry.
“We’re going without any calculation, knowing clearly what is needed to take us through and what eliminates us, so it’s a chance to grow as a team.
“Because even against FC Platinum we learnt a great lesson on how to grow from being 2-0 down to not giving up and fighting back to show the character of this great club.”
