National under-23 coach David Notoane has explained why he has called up Kaizer Chiefs right back Reeve Frosler, who has not played a competitive game this season.
Frosler, who has previously played for the national under-20s, did not play for Bidvest Wits in the first half of the season before making a move to Amakhosi in the January transfer window. Due to his lack of match fitness, Frosler is yet to make a first team appearance for the club.
Frosler is in the provisional squad and will get a chance to prove his fitness in camp, which starts on Sunday.
Should be be selected, will probably provide cover to Kabelo Seriba, who plays in Latvia. The final squad will be announced next week, ahead of their two-legged Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola during the FIFA international week.
“At right back we brought in Kabelo Seriba, who is doing very well in Latvia. Reeve Frosler is coming into rhythm at Kaizer Chiefs and he has played in a few friendly games. We did checks and balances, also considering that we are playing two matches. We’ve got a fair balance. You look at the left side where we brought in [Sibusiso] Mabiliso and [Katleho] Mohamme who has done well in the reserve league for SuperSport.
Notoane says he considered selecting young Bloemfontein Celtic left back Bongani Sam, but feels he is not ready just yet for a game as big as this one. Sam made his professional debut this season.
“Sam was an option of course, I like him. We think that there is quality there going forward, but on the balance of experience at international level…do you want to throw in Sam in a game where we really need to go out and win?”
