Free State Stars striker Eleazar Rodgers says he was relieved to score his first goal of the season, getting the monkey off his back.
Rodgers bagged a goal in the 2-2 draw against Black Leopards in the Absa Premiership last weekend and was on the score sheet again when Ea Lla Koto played to a 1-1 draw with Polokwane City on Wednesday.
"Yes, it was my first goal this season for Stars [against Leopards]," Rodgers tells KickOff.com.
"It felt very good to score my first goal. [It] Felt like a relief from heavy weight on my shoulders. And also we were behind so the goal brought us back into the game with a chance to win but it ended in a draw. It's good to achieve something you have been longing to do and it hasn't been coming. Glory to God for rewarding me and my team with the goals, he is always on time. We will continue trusting him more going forward."
The 34-year-old believes the goal will open doors for many more.
"Yes indeed the start of more to come. I have settled long time in Stars, just on general we have struggled to convert our chances. We have recently started scoring and will continue to try scoring more as we need positive results, goals win games. I don't think there is anything specific and there is no excuse for not scoring, one could argue and say we were unlucky or off form or lack game time but it's not that. We are just glad that we creating a lot more and converting them."
Asked how coach Nikola Kavazovic wants him to play in his system, Rodgers said: "I have to play at my best and deliver consistent perfomances. I'm a striker so he wants me to score and provide for teammates around me."
Stars, currently in the 14th place on the league standings, take on SuperSport United at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday (15h30).
