Eric Tinkler calls for Maritzburg United mental strength in relegation battle

Posted: 1 March 2019 Time: 14:00

Maritzburg United coach Eric Tinkler want his players to be mentally ready for anything as they fight for survival in the Absa Premiership.

Speaking ahead of tonight's crunch clash against AmaZulu, the former Bafana Bafana midfielder was asked if he feels his players are being provoked purposely to make things worse because they are in a tough situation.

"Players need to be strong mentally, they need to focus more on the fight as they are really fighting for their lives and wages," Tinkler said.

"If we get relegated, salaries will be cut, they need to be focused and forget about things that can distract them."

On facing Usuthu in a KwaZulu-Natal derby, Tinkler feels Cavin Johnson's boys are a big threat as they've already beat Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City.

"We know they're coming from a loss but we can't read too much into that, this team has beaten Mamelodi Sundowns away and also Cape Town City, they are a very good side, this season they've proven that," he explained.

Next for the Team of Choice after tonight's game are matches against Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns, and Tinkler believes those will be different stories altogether.

"My focus is the game against AmaZulu, we have to win this game," he stressed. "About Sundowns and Chiefs, we will see after this match, players usually don't need motivation to play against the big guys, we know that."

Tinkler then responded to comments made by club chairman Farook Kadodia about referees being harsh on his team.

"The reality is that teams [sometimes lose] because of some referees' decisions, and coaches can't do anything about it," he added.
