Tyrique Bartlett: Newcastle United striker on aim of proving himself in England and season objectives

Posted: 25 February 2019 Time: 16:00

South African teenager Tyrique Bartlett is aiming to 'make up for lost time' and is looking towards finishing the season with silverware with the Newcastle reserve side.

Bartlett, 19, suffered his first serious injury of his burgeoning career which kept him out of action for the last five months for the Magpies.

However, upon his return to action with the U23 side (reserve team), the son of Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Shaun, netted in the 27-minute cameo against Reading.

And after his instant impact in the Group H division within the 2-0 win, the Amajita striker is hoping to remind the club of his talents that they've been without since pre-season preparation.

"Our main focus is making sure we get a strong result against Leeds to top the group," Bartlett told the club's website. "We want to get ourselves into the best position possible for the matches afterwards.

"It [the Reading strike] wasn't the cleanest goal ever but I'm just happy that the weight is off my shoulders and I now want to maintain some consistency and get back into full speed.

"Just being able to get back on the field - even running - was a huge relief. I'm happy to be back with the team and now want to contribute as much as possible."

On the injury lay-off and objectives: "I have never been injured for that period of time before so having to deal with that in terms of being away from home was difficult.

"It was as if I had nothing to do as there was a long recovery time of waiting for my ankle to heal. I want to show what I've still got after being out for so long.

"It may have been forgotten about or such but I want to show I'm capable of performing well."

Bartlett will be aiming to regain full fitness and form ahead of the upcoming U20 FIFA World Cup in Poland, which kicks off on May 25.
