Witbank Spurs coach Shakes Mashaba believes they’ll survive relegation this season and then challenge for promotion next term.

Mashaba was brought in last month to try save relegation-threatened Spurs in the National First Division, and he’s been happy with the start they’ve made.

Spurs, who were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup last weekend by Golden Arrows, are currently a place above bottom-side Real Kings with 10 matches left in the season.

The final third of the season will be important for the side as they look to get themselves into a comfortable position. What helps them is that the teams above them are not too far off in terms of points.

“I’ve been offered this opportunity to guide Witbank Spurs out of the relegation zone. Fortunately we’ve started on a high note, with a win, a draw and we’ve lost one. It shows that things are coming right,” the former Bafana Bafana coach said.

“For now we are focusing on staying away from relegation, that’s the most important thing. But our wish would be to see this team going to the play-offs next season and qualify to play in the PSL. Most of the boys are looking forward to playing in the PSL.”

Spurs will host play-off hopefuls Richards Bay at Puma Stadium this afternoon (15h00), a tough one for Mashaba’s men.
