CAF Champions League match report Mimosas v Mamelodi Sundowns 12 February 2019

Posted: 12 February 2019 Time: 16:48

Mamelodi Sundowns and ASEC Mimosas settled for a share of the spoils in their CAF Champions League Group A encounter on Tuesday evening.

Following successive league wins, the odds favoured Sundowns with only two defeats from their last five matches in all competitions.

Denis Onyango returned to goal, with Anele Ngcongca slotting in at right-back and Gaston Sirino up front in the three changes for the South African champions.

Embroiled in a slow start, Sundowns failed to make use of a good chance to take the lead when Thapelo Morena fired wide following Themba Zwane’s layoff on 23 minutes.

The Ivorian threatened later on towards halftime, but failed to find the ultimate cutting edge to beat down the Brazilians defence.

Likewise, Sundowns failed to create any meaningful threats despite seeing loads of possession in the latter stages of the half.

Famous for his debut goal against the Ivorian outfit a couple weeks ago, Emiliano Tade was the game’s first change at the start of the second half as the in-effective Sirino made way.

The chances continued to come in dribs and drabs, as the Brazilians hoofed another close-range opportunity when Zwane failed to cap off a counter-attacking move on 55 minutes.

Battling to carve out a opening, Sundowns introduced Phakamani Mahlambi in the final quarter for Morena, as Pitso Mosimane threw the kitchen sink for a breakthrough.

With the former Bidvest Wits and Al Ahly man making no impact, the Tshwane side were forced to settle for a draw as attention shifts to the Absa Premiership next Wednesday.

Teams:

Sundowns: Onyango, Ngcongca, Arendse, Nascimento, Lakay, Kekana, Mabunda, Zwane, Maboe, Morena, Sirino.

Subs: Mweene, Langerman, Jali, Tade, Mahlambi, Coetzee, Laffor.
