Maritzburg United coach Eric Tinkler is happy to get more time to prepare for their next league game as their survival battles takes a temporary break.

Since it is Nedbank Cup this weekend, the Absa Premiership basement dwellers' next match is against Cape Town City on February 23.

Tinkler feels the team's chances of survival will not only be in their hands, but they will also need favours from other teams.

"As much as we need to win our games, we also pray for our competition to drop points," Tinkler said after their first home win of the season on Friday against Polokwane City.

"It's a very tough situation but we believe this break will benefit the team a lot. I will definitely use the week to look at other players, maybe have a friendly game and also look at how we can improve in dealing with pressure."

Despite the 3-1 win at Harry Gwala Stadium, Tinkler did notice challenges that face his team.

"It was a good win, we needed these three points and I thought we should've scored more goals as we created more chances," he said.

"It been a long and tough season, players might be suffering from mental fatigue. I'm happy that we will only play in two weeks' time, it gives us more time to prepare for our next game."
