Mamelodi Sundowns are in the 'pound seat', according to former player Matthew Booth

Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits defender Matthew Booth feels the Brazilians are favourites to win the title, while the log-leading Clever Boys are starting to crack.

Second-placed Sundowns are away on CAF Champions League duty, but the weekend results favoured them as Wits, Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City and Kaizer Chiefs all dropped points.

Sundowns are three points behind the Clever Boys, with three games in hand.

“It’s very tight. I mean Sundowns are in the pound seat, without a doubt. I think Wits are starting to show cracks,” Booth said during the launch of the Castle Africa 5s competition in Soweto on Monday afternoon.

“The fact that they lost to Highlands now is probably better than them doing it closer to the end of the season, so it’s not all doom and gloom for them, but certainly Sundowns will be the happier [side],” the former Bafana Bafana centre-back said.

Booth, though, says he is more interested in the battle to stay alive at the bottom of the standings, especially after Maritzburg United registered their first victory since September.

“For me, it’s a lot more interesting what’s happening down at the bottom.”

Sundowns, meanwhile, will take on ASEC Mimosas in a Champions League Group A match in Abidjan on Tuesday (18h00).

They will be back in domestic action next Wednesday when they host Polokwane City at Loftus Stadium (19h30).
