Mxolisi Macuphu: Play-time was key to SuperSport United loan

Posted: 8 February 2019 Time: 16:01

New SuperSport United striker Mxolisi Macuphu says his search for game-time was the reason he accepted a loan move to the Tshwane giants.

Macuphu did the unthinkable in the January transfer window when he swapped a Bidvest Wits team that stands a huge chance of lifting the league title and accepted a loan move to United, who are still fighting to consolidate a top-eight spot.

The 29-year-old was recently used as part of a swap deal that has seen Fagrie Lakay move to Wits on loan prior to his pre-contract with the Clever Boys starting on July 1.

Macuphu managed 14 appearances and netted only twice in all competitions for his parent club this season.

"My stay at United has been great, I've been welcomed with open hands, it's been a great session since I've arrived," Macuphu tells KickOff.com.

The former Jomo Cosmos and Chippa United man admits that like everyone else, the loan move caught him by surprise.

"It was a surprise indeed, but one can't argue with it. I mean SuperSport is a fantastic club for any professional footballer. SuperSport were keen on me joining them. Yes, I had a lot to think about.

"I mean Bidvest Wits are top of the log and all but I think my play-time steered me in the direction to join SuperSport. Yes it's a loan move, like I said play-time was key for me. We don't know our destiny and it's football, anything is possible."

Asked what it is he hopes to achieve by the end of his short stay with Matsatsantsa, he said: "As a striker, to get more on the scoresheet.

"But again, what I've learned from Gavin [Hunt, Wits coach] is that if you are beneficial to the team and you work for the team for the best, then that's good enough.

"I would like to thank SuperSport for the faith they have in me, and why not pay that faith back with solid performances?"
