Mamelodi Sundowns are in Abidjan to face ASEC Mimosas

Posted: 8 February 2019 Time: 09:00

Mamelodi Sundowns flew out to Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on Thursday to start preparing for their CAF Champions Group A match against ASEC Mimosas, to take place on Tuesday.

Throughout his time as Sundowns coach, Pitso Mosimane has always stressed the importance of thoroughly preparing for opponents they face on the continent.

Not only would he have gathered information on ASEC’s home matches via video, but he also wants his players to adapt to conditions away from home, hence they usually leave early for matches they play outside of South Africa.

This has, on many occasions, worked for them as they have been able to collect a point, or three, in matches they play away from home.

Sundowns are currently top of the Group A standings on six points, level with 2017 champions Wydad Casablanca. A win against ASEC would all but confirm their spot in knockout phase of the competition.

Despite the busy schedule, Sundowns have been able to grind results and believe they have what it takes to win both the Absa Premiership and CAF Champions. With the depth coach Mosimane has in his squad, the possibilities of winning both titles cannot be ruled out.

“We want to finish as the number one team in our group because those numbers ones will be put on one side in the draw for the quarterfinals,” Mosimane said.

Wydad will host Nigerian side Lobi Stars in the other group match on Tuesday.
