Maritzburg United coach Eric Tinkler has revealed he had a chat with Mabhuti Khenyeza about his contribution to the club, but could not stop him from returning to AmaZulu.

Khenyeza joined the Team of Choice in early January as Muhsin Ertugral's assistant coach after retiring at AmaZulu, but was on Tuesday announced as the second assistant coach to Cavin Johnson at Usuthu.

Tinkler, who replaced Ertugral after the Turk was sacked at the end of January, was asked whether he influenced Khenyeza's decision to return to AmaZulu.

"I had plans to keep Khenyeza as my second assistant coach because I believe the club still needed him, especially in helping our strikers," he said.

"Nowadays teams do get coaches for strikers and I needed him to focus on that department but unfortunately he made up his mind to return to AmaZulu as he had an option to return there."

Tinkler also revealed Maritzburg couldn't actually afford a second assistant coach.

"I made a decision to come with Vincent Kobola as my first assistant, and also the club unfortunately couldn't afford a second assistant."
