Chippa United coach Clinton Larsen pleased with win over Maritzburg United in first Chilli Boys test

New Chippa United coach Clinton Larsen says having a week to prepare for his first match against Maritzburg United helped him get off to a winning start.

Larsen recently replaced Joel Masutha at Chippa and started his tenure at the relegation-threatened club with a 2-0 win over fellow strugglers Maritzburg United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.

"Fortunately for me, I had a week to train and see what is needed in this team," said Larsen, who was sacked by Golden Arrows in December 2018.

"The boys responded very well. We now won our first game in three months."

Larsen believes the constant coaching changes at Chippa contributed to their battles this campaign. Club owner Siviwe Mpengesi fired Dan Malesela for a second time earlier this season, as well as Eric Tinkler and Masutha.

"I came to a club that has been changing coaches a lot. It didn't sit well with the players and I had to change the mood in the camp. I'm happy it worked and now we are all on the same page."

The victory snapped an 11-game winless run for the Chilli Boys and leaves the Port Elizabeth-based outfit on 15 points from 18 matches - four points above bottom-placed Maritzburg and level with Baroka and AmaZulu.

"We honestly knew about them," Larsen said of their opponents on the weekend.

"We had to enjoy ourselves and make sure they are not getting any chances. They played against Sundowns and you could see they were tired."

He added: "This win is very important to us as we want to get out of the relegation zone, which is our main focus."
