Footballer overtakes Lionel Messi in active international scoring charts - trails Cristiano Ronaldo

A footballer unknown to many has made history by overtaking Argentina captain Lionel Messi for the most international goals scored by active players and now only trails Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo and Messi are the two names synonymous with modern football as the greatest goalscorers of their generation.

However, if you were to be quizzed about the player sandwiched between them as the most prolific current international goal-scorer, would you have guessed it to be the captain of the Indian national team?

Sunil Chhetri scored twice against Thailand at the 2019 Asian Cup to reach 67 goals and overtake Argentina forward Messi's 65 to move second in the list.

He is still a way off Ronaldo's 85 goals for Portugal but 34-year-old is also 20th on the all-time list - ahead of not only Messi but the likes of Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba and Brazilian icon Ronaldo Nazario.

The 34-year-old who made his international debut back in 2005 has achieved the historic milestone in 105 caps.
