Former Golden Arrows coach Khabo Zondo feels Mabhuti Khenyeza could have scored more goals in his career

Former Golden Arrows coach Khabo Zondo is not surprised Mabhuti Khenyeza scored as many goals as he did, but feels the retired striker could have bagged many more.

AmaZulu announced this past week that Khenyeza had called it a day on his playing career and he will now be working as an assistant coach to Muhsin Ertugral at Usuthu’s KZN rivals Maritzburg United.

Khenyeza never won the Golden Boot award, but will be remembered as one of the PSL’s most prolific scorers with 110 goals.

Zondo, who gave Khenyeza his PSL debut in 2002 at Arrows, says the player had the quality to reach greater heights in front of goal.

“For me he could have done much better, but I am not surprised that he reached that number of goals. Mabhuti was born to score goals, he always wants to score,” Zondo tells

“He was selfish in the right way, like any striker. He would carry that responsibility, he was not scared. At times I would say instead of scoring you could have passed, but you could see that his attitude is that one of a goal scorer.

“He packed an impeccable, hot right foot. He had to work on his accuracy at times, but most of them were on target. He was strong to take defenders away. He was not a great dribbler, but he was a good protector of the ball.”

Zondo does not know how well Khenyeza will do as a coach, but hopes the 36-year-old will be given a fair chance to prove himself.

“To be honest, it’s a side I would still need to see. I remember from time to time Mabhuti would say that he has a team where he comes from, a development team that he always looks after. I am not quite sure if he will or will not make a good coach, but everyone has to be given a chance.”
