Khabo Zondo on why Mabhuti Khenyeza will be missed on the playing field

Posted: 3 January 2019 Time: 16:02

Former Golden Arrows coach Khabo Zondo says players with the attitude of Mabhuti Khenyeza are hard to come by these days and he will be missed on the playing field.

Zondo gave Khenyeza his debut back in 2002 and the player remains the club’s all-time top scorer with 43 goals.

Khenyeza on Wednesday brought an end to his career at the age of 36, having scored 110 goals in 16 years.

He was announced as Maritzburg United’s new assistant coach on Thursday and will work under head coach Muhsin Ertugral.

“He will be missed. Mabhuti lasted this long in football because of his attitude towards the game. You don’t find him on the wrong side of things most of the time. He concentrated on his game and training was key,” Zondo says.

“He helped himself a lot with good training, good behaviour outside of the game. He will be missed a lot, to be honest, because we don’t find players like Mabhuti anymore who are rounded with these aspects of the game.”

Zondo was impressed with Khenyeza’s work ethic and focus. The 36-year-old was disciplined and you’d never hear any negative stories about him off the pitch.

“Generally he is a very hard-working man, disciplined and time-wise, in terms of punctuality, you’ll find him being the first to arrive at training and the last one to leave. He does extra work on his own and he is quite an inquisitive person. He is someone who always looked at his football to improve.

“It was nice working with him because he would take advice. You would not find a problem with him. I found it easy and joyful to work with a player like Mabhuti. From the first day we got to know one another you could tell that he did not want to disappoint. He always wanted to do the best for himself and the club.”
