Bloemfontein Celtic reveal why coach Steve Komphela resigned

Posted: 28 December 2018 Time: 13:08

Bloemfontein Celtic PRO and media officer Sello Nduna says Steve Komphela tendered his resignation on Thursday due to the club’s lack of financial resources.

Komphela has left Phunya Sele Sele and has been linked with a move to Golden Arrows, who are without a coach after they amicably parted ways with Clinton Larsen on Thursday.

Despite the financial problems at Celtic, Komphela was able to motivate the players to perform. They have consistently been in the top eight since he took over before the start of the season.

But now things could prove to be difficult in the second half of the season. Lehlohonolo Seema, John Maduka and Simon Gopane have taken over as caretaker coaches. It’s unclear if Celtic will be hiring a new man to replace Komphela, or if they will put their faith in the caretakers for the rest of the season.

“Steve is a former Celtic coach. He tendered his resignation yesterday,” Nduna tells

“It’s not a secret that we are going through a difficult financial patch, which is very difficult for us as a team. We are trying to keep the team afloat. Remember the team is still up for sale, so it was an issue of instability; the issue of lack of financial resources.

“To be honest, we thought Steve is the right remedy for this team. We lost four consecutive games, but this team was on another level.”

Nduna confirmed that Komphela and all the players had been paid their salaries and no one is owed money.

“No one is being owed anything. Surely you can speak to him and he would testify to that.”
