Mich D’Avray vacates position as Head of Football at Ajax Cape Town as Hans Vonk steps in

Ajax Cape Town have announced that Mich D’Avray has vacated his position at the club, with Hans Vonk stepping in to cover the role.

D’Avray, who has been associated with the Urban Warriors for the past two-and-a-half years in a number of different positions, took over as Head of Football last year, a role which oversaw proceedings across all levels at the club.

Yet the former Moroka Swallows, Cape Town Spurs and Bloemfontein Celtic coach, who also served as an assistant and interim coach at Ajax, has vacated his post less than 18 months later, citing “personal reasons”.

“After two and a half years with Ajax Cape Town, D’Avray decided, on his return from a short visit to Australia, to end his spell at the Urban Warriors, citing his reasons as personal,” read a statement by the club.

His position will be filled by current Head of Youth Vonk, who will serve in both capacities.

“Vonk will, in addition to taking D’Avray’s portfolio, also retain the position of 'Head of Youth' until the end of the 2018-2019 season,” the statement read.

Ajax CEO Ari Efstathiou admits D’Avray will be missed in the Cape.

“Mich’s experience, loyalty and commitment to Ajax Cape Town will be missed, but I am 100% sure he will be a huge asset to any organisation,” Efstathiou said.

D’Avray himself acknowledged his disappointment, but added that he felt the club can resurrect their season to ensure their top-flight return.

“I am disappointed in leaving Ajax Cape Town, but I am very confident that this present squad of players are good enough to win promotion to the Absa Premiership,” he said. “All that is required is a couple of wins to lift the confidence of the players.”
