Another draw for Chiefs

Posted: 16 December 2007 Time: 18:04

Kaizer Chiefs played to their eighth draw of the Absa Premiership season when they were held 1-1 by Bloemfontein Celtic at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Moses Spandeel had given Celtic the lead from the penalty spot, before Kaizer Motaung Jnr equalized in the second half to earn a share of the spoils.

Chiefs made the early running and Cyril Nzama, who scored in midweek against Golden Arrows, found himself in space in the box on eight minutes, but slipped as he shot and the ball went harmlessly high and wide.

Tinashe Nengomasha tried a spectacular bicycle-kick two minutes later that also failed to work Shu-Aib Walters in the home goal, while Motseothata November had the first shot in anger at the other end but it drifted wide.

Mark Amofah had a great chance to give Celtic the lead on 22 minutes when he beat the off-side trap and raced clear one-on-one with Itumaleng Khune, who did brilliantly to block the Ghanaian’s shot by showing speed off his line.

David Obua fired in a rocket that was beaten away by Walters on the half-hour mark, and Celtic went up the other end and almost took the lead themselves as the speedy Amofah again found space and his shot was narrowly wide of the upright.

Great play from David Mathebula down the right set up Gerald Sibeko unmarked in the area, but he spooned his shot wide when he really should have hit the target. That was true a few minutes later as well when he shot wildly when again well placed.

But it was Celtic who took the lead a minute before halftime when Nzama upended November in the box and Spandeel sent Khune the wrong way to convert from the penalty-spot.

It looked a fair award, though Chiefs might argue that the initial contact made by Nzama was outside the box.

Amakhosi coach Muhsin Ertugral showed his displeasure with his side at the halftime break when he replaced Obua and Mathebula with Motaung Jnr and Thabo Mooki.

But it was Celtic who had two early openings in the second period, but neither Amofah nor Kukame could make the most of them with some wild shooting.

And the duo should have extended the lead on the hour-mark when Amofah crossed for an unmarked Kukame, who had a simple tap-in, but made a lazy attempt to attack the ball and the chance was gone.

The pattern of the game was becoming clear. Chiefs were throwing men forward in search of the equaliser, with Celtic content to use Amofah’s pace to hit them on the break.

And they were made to pay for that when Motaung Jnr equalised on 72 minutes as he latched onto the loose ball at the back post and his shot on the stretch beat Walters.

Chiefs’ shooting from distance left a lot to be desired and they failed to really test Walters from there on in, despite their obvious superiority in the possession stakes.

And Celtic almost made them pay when substitute Carlo Scott found acres of space down the left, but, with plenty of time to pick out one of the three teammates in the box, instead fired his cross straight at a defender.

Motaung Jnr created a shooting chance for himself in injury time, but his effort was easily saved by Walters.

Bad results, very bad if we are to challenge for the championship. We are not able to win two consecutive league games in the first round.Remember the second round will always be more tougher as teams will be fighting to avoid relegation and some hoping to be within the top 8 bricket.Chiefs should look into employing a sport psychologist to deal with the inconsistent perfomance of the team, otherwise we are bound to battle especially with league games.

Like i said before, Mr Motaung should stop talking. This team is frustrating us, and we really want some quality players in the January transfer window. We have to mix rather than rely on the development. Those of Zuke and Mandla are good for the future, but we need enough muscles to keep the brand where it ought to be.Torrealba will only join us in June, so we therefore need someone to make sure come the end of the season, we are up there. I can tell the title is out of our reach, but come on, we need to lose with pride. Maybe the coach can focuses a lot of defence and ignored the striking department. Forgive me all of you guys, but looking at the acquisition of Mabhuti Khanyeza one cant help but wonder why they never signed him when he was on song at his early days, and then sign him just when there were new prospects such as Mphela, Fanteni, Mashego and the likes. Sometimes i dont understand our management. Its like we always wait for someone to be a free agent to sign him. Cant we spend just like we did with Tshabalala. Khanyeza, Bartlet, Torrealba, Tau, Zotwane, etc, were all 'free agents' when we pursued them. Come on guys. This is not the Chiefs i grew to like.

I would like to foward my suggestion. Chiefs must look at the mistakes done by nzama at our defence. The guy is not fit to play for chiefs. He does not match the pace of the current crop of youngsters. I really do not understand why he is always on the first eleven. We have got players that can play far better than him. I would understand if Tau was injured. The sooner our couch realises this the better for the team.

Eish, another draw. Nzama is struggling, cann`t he be benched for some time. Shaun Bartlett is letting young players down his input is below par. Tshabalal should be encouraged to take players on to stretch the opposition defence, In fact most of Chiefs goals are initiated from crosses. Mathebula should not have been substituted, rather Sibeko since his efforts were wasteful. Chiefs players, especially midfielders should be encouraged to shoot from distance.

As i said last week our strikers can’t score we need someone who can play good passes we need a good passer of the ball as now we know we having good finishers Bartlet, Khanyeza and Motaung but they can’t score if we don’t sign someone from North Africa who can play in front of Nenghamashe behind the strikers.

Exactly, Ntlakuso, KC management's recruitment policy is to target only out of contract players as you so rightly listed recent noteworthy acquisitions. Current form and potential are not desirable criteria in their eyes. It is the Motaung's a way of avoiding paying for talentaed players. A case in point is the Papi Zothwane saga, where as soon as a 'contract' materialised they washed their hands off a promising, talented player they had already paraded. Why? Is it too much of a hassle to negotiate with teams when you want a player? Or is there no player in the market worth spending money on? C'mon guys,it is called capital investment! As for the league lets just forget, for you can't win the legue if you draw more than half your games: 8 drawn even before the first round is over. Like I said before, Mushini-wa-didraw's tactics aim to avoid defeat hence the endless draws and penalty wins! That may be a good strategy in knockout competitions, but in the league it just won't suffice!

Cyril Nzama must be benched for atleast 6 matches.... He was totally out of the game and he has been like this for the previous games as well no wonder he was dropped from the Bafana camp. Please Mushin sort out your defence otherwise we are in for another disaster this season.....

This is an interesting phenomenon. Mushis Ertugral is the master of excuses, in Durban against AmaZulu he wanted to "kill" the referee and incited the fans against the poor match official. What did Ertugral want from him, the referee cannot score goals for Chiefs, coach. Then he draws against Celtic, and there's no prizes for guessing that Ertugral once again came up with another "convenient" excuse. This time he says it is the fatigue. Fatigue? Really now coach, accept defeats (or in draws) with dignity and stop with excuses.

Good Morning Guys..

I think Chiefs is not doing bad @ all.. those youngsters just need to play a bit more games & they will be on fire.. YES they r dropping valuable Points.

But over all i will Chiefs is not that bad so is Pirates.. You guys just need to tight up your defence & start collecting points.

NB: CHIEFS PLEASE GET RID OF Cyril Nzama A.S.A.P Or else u will end up like Sundowns.. playing with OLD,OUT OF FORM & WORNED OUT players.

I will advice Pirates & Chiefs to give their young players a chance but tell them they need to collect maxium points & during the Jan Transfer window please get more young & skillfull players..

I fancy Pirates,Chiefs Or Ajax to win the Leg but it's still too early.

I have given up on Sundowns as they are playing the same squad of players who are out of form, old & worned out & to make matters worse Downs have a CLUELESS COACH, so Sundowns will definetly do very bad this season unless they clear up their old & out of form players in Jan.

I am a Sundowns Fans by the way, i am also a soccer fan hence i am saying i fancy Chiefs POr Pirates or maybe Ajax to win the Leg, unless Downs clear out 99% of the current players.

Let's support our National Squad Bafana Bafana @ Ghana hope they do well...

If we can not get any playmaker now then we need to re consider Scara, he is also good in creating a goal scoring chances, coach please let the guy play now, this punishment is enough especial if the team is not doing well try some other combination, the team like Chiefs in that position and can't win even two games in a raw is very hurting to the supporters.

Yes Scara is a good player with a bad attitude he is not disciplined he plays when he wants we don’t need him in our new team he is going to bad influence the other players,we dont need him. they must a buy player that we dont know for that position .

I thought bartlet's performance on the day was just not good enough, though i'm a die hard bucs fan i like it more when i win & chiefs win to tighten' competition between us. however i feel that obua was better than most of the guys, why did the coach replace him???

Mr Motaung must redeploy Bobby & Thebe to elsewhere we wont see/hear them. Get a local black coach, put Nzama, Bocksor & Sibeko on free transfer. Buy Katlego Mphela. Recall Schalkwyk & Ngobese and apologise to them. Well done on Nkambule & Torrealba. Please Chincha!!! This is bad for chiefs and pirates - if other teams are improving, they also have to! Damn it!

Emmanuel "Modimo" Ngobese shud b recalled. Jose can be a good aquisition but without the service he will look like a twelve year old. If u look at sibeko,i said it before he is a lucky playa just like the likes of Mlwane,Mphafudi,Thato mokoena,Marco mthembu, jerry mthethwa, who ended up at chiefs. Gert is at a league of his own if u were to compare the two.Muhsin b warned bro, u r digging your own grave and ur ball boy Fanie will burry you!!!!!!
