Orlando Pirates and Free State Stars got a point each when they drew 1-1 in an Absa Premiership match at the Johannesburg Stadium on Saturday evening.
Ralph Matema scored for Pirates in the first half and Prince Olomu got the equaliser for Stars early in the second half.
Bennett Chenene expertly picked out Matema in the box and the Zimbabwean casually fired home. Kennedy Mweene got a hand to the ball but it just snuck underneath him to give Bucs the lead in the 10th minute.
Five minutes later Excellent Walaza fired in a rocket but Mweene was up to the task and made a fine save. It was all Pirates as they pressed Stars in their half with skipper Teko Modise controlling play from midfield. Coach Owen Da Gama was livid and ran on to the field when his playmaker was viciously hacked down by Stars defender Sipho Nkosi.
Modise returned to the field minutes later unharmed to the delight of the fans. Stars though were getting in a rhythm. Led by Diyo Sibisi upfront, the visitors troubled Bucs on the counter-attack.
Thulasizwe Mbuyane set Sibisi up for a scoring chance just on the half-hour but the strikers was a little late to connect with the ball.
Three minutes after the break Stars caught Pirates napping. Fanyana Dhladhla fought off Innocent Mdledle and then sent a low ball in to the penalty area which Olomu slotted home to silence the partisan crowd.
Modise had a good chance to put his side back in the lead in the 56th minute. The skipper stung Mweene's palms with a free kick from just outside the 18-yard area.
Lebohang Mokoena missed a glorious chance in the 68th minute. Walaza's shot went wide and to the feet of Mokoena, who from five yards out tamely struck the ball straight at Mweene for him to make an easy save.
In the end both sides had to settle for a hard-fought point.
