Kaizer Chiefs news: Giovanni Solinas wary of extra-time and penalties in Telkom Knockout quarterfinal

Posted: 1 November 2018 Time: 12:28

Kaizer Chiefs coach Giovanni Solinas is wary heading into this weekend’s Telkom Knockout quarterfinal but insists he has learnt lessons from their Soweto Derby defeat.

Chiefs will be up against familiar foes SuperSport United for the third time this season in the second round of the league cup, with this fixture scheduled to take place at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday.

Amakhosi previously fell to the same Matsatsantsa outfit in their two-legged MTN8 semi-final after losing 1-0 in the second leg at FNB Stadium, and Solinas has not forgotten the potential threat of the Tshwane outfit.

“SuperSport beat us in the MTN8, this shows that SuperSport is strong. Now it’s a new game and we need to fight to move on [to the next round],” said Solinas.

The Italian is also mindful of the possibility of the match stretching into extra-time and a penalty shootout and stresses the importance of his charges being mentally ready therefor.

“When you play a knockout game, you have to be ready for everything. The game might finish in 90 minutes, or it might not and go to extra-time and maybe even penalties,” he added.

“So, we need to be ready in the mind for this; ready to continue fighting in extra-time and ready for the penalty shootout, because this is only one game.

“When you play this cup game, [there is] no other option – you either go in or go out.”
