Eric Tinkler threatens disciplinary action against Mark Mayambela following Orlando Pirates clash

Posted: 22 October 2018 Time: 17:35

Chippa United coach Eric Tinkler has explained what lead to the early substitution of captain Mark Mayambela in their Telkom Knockout defeat to Orlando Pirates.

Mayambela was hauled off with just four minutes to go until half-time as Tinkler, fuming at his skipper along the touchline, made a bold statement of intent.

The 31-year-old had been handed the captain’s armband by former coach Dan Malesela and has been a regular for the Chilli Boys since his arrival from Ajax Cape Town last season.

Tinkler’s arrival has seen him retain the role, while he also missed just one of their six matches thus far.

However, the skilful midfielder seemingly got on the wrong side of the coach’s books after a heated exchange led to his immediate substitution despite half-time being just a few minutes away.

Without giving much away, the former Bucs coach explained his dissatisfaction with the manner in which Mayambela conducted himself and warned internal action.

“You didn’t see why? Surely, it’s obvious why [he was taken off]. But, it’s an internal matter. It’s a discipline matter, and that will be dealt with internally,” said Tinkler after the match.

“But it was more than obvious. This is the biggest game on TV this weekend, everybody across the country was watching Pirates, and you can’t behave that way.

“So, I reacted to it and I done what I felt was necessary, but it will be dealt with internally.”

The Port Elizabeth-based outfit next face Mamelodi Sundowns at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in East London on Saturday, before tackling Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs in Durban on November 10.
