Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup match report

Mamelodi Sundowns claimed the Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup after edging AmaZulu 2-1 on Saturday evening in Ulundi.

Both sides used the encounter to field players, who have enjoyed a lot of game-time during the season.

The Brazilians took the lead in the seventh minute through a free-kick from Lyle Lakay that took a deflection and wrong-footed Usuthu shot-stopper Energy Murambadoro, 0-1.

Aubrey Ngoma had a chance to double the lead for Pitso Mosimane’s charges in the 20th minute after latching into a loose ball inside the box but he could not capitalise.

Lakay almost completed his brace for Masandawana on the half-hour mark after finding space to strike inside the box but his effort did not have enough power to beat Murambadoro.

Cavin Johnson’s troops were absorbing the pressure from the visitors ten minutes before the break and playing on counter-attacks.

Mhlengi Cele came close to finding the equaliser for Usuthu on the stroke of halftime with a close range strike that sailed wide after veteran striker Siyabonga Nomvethe sent in a good cross from the left flank.

The Brazilians survived a late surge from the hosts and took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Nomvethe levelled matters for hosts just after the break from a penalty spot after Somila Ntsundwana was brought down inside the box, 1-1.

Minutes later, Augustine Ramphele almost grabbed the lead for Johnson’s men with a strike that came off the crossbar.

Themba Zwane restored the lead for Masandawana in the 54th minute, getting past Murambadoro to score into an empty net after he was picked out by Jeremy Brockie, 1-2.

Nomvethe hit the back of the net for Usuthu in the 69th minute with a header inside the box following a cross but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Zwane almost put daylight between the Brazilians and Usuthu in the 77th minute with a low strike from close range but he was denied by Murambadoro.

Nevertheless, Sundowns saw out the remaining stages of the second half to claim the Legacy Cup title.
