Teko – a worthy winner

Posted: 8 June 2009 Time: 13:40

Teko Modise is the KICK OFF magazine Footballer of the Season. But a former Pirates captain, who played with Teko in his early years, believes he has more to offer.

“The accolades that Teko Modise is getting have been a long time coming. He’s worked very, very hard to be where he is right now,” says Sam Pam, who played for Stars, Pirates, Ajax Cape Town and City Pillars before retiring.   “The Bible says life is full of seasons and Teko was in a season of hard work and now he is in a season where he is reaping all that he put in.   “During our Ria Stars days I could see that he had the potential to be world-class and I still believe he has the ability to be in the class of Messi and Ronaldo. But he needs to be challenged because he has so much more to offer the game.   “He was very good this season, but I think he was a little bit below what he did last season. Remember, he’s way above par in comparison to many players his age … some who have fallen right out of the game,” says the big Nigerian, who was asked by Manyora’s boss Chicco Twala to keep an eye on Teko when he signed for Ria Stars.   To read an interview with Modise on his award and about his 2008/09 season, get the latest edition of KICK OFF magazine now.   Also in issue number 354, KICK OFF asks ten of Modise’s Pirates and Bafana teammates to tell readers what makes Teko special.

Jadakiss- Why (Pirates Remix)

Why we never see the chairman at the stadium/ why you never see Mushangazikhe with no dreads, guess he got an ugly cranium/ why we sign a shipload of players and still don't win/ I hear Mr Chairman fired the cleaners coz they got nothing to clean/ why Senzo gave away those goals/ and why Josephs didn't make a difference when he stood between the poles/ why our top scorer is paid to defend/ what's those clowns upfront doing, guess how much money is spent?

Jadakiss- why (Chiefs Remix)

Why our stadium still ain't built
why Bobby never calls us to hear how we feel
matter of fact man Bobby got too much power
I'd kick him in the tummy before I give Jessica some nice flowers
why we only got 2 players in the squad
why Mphela was selected, why Mdledle made the cut
why we hired an unknown coach
they say he's from Serbia I don't care
why Hunt wasn't approached
why we'll always come third in the league run
why we gotta win minor cups and it's supposed to be fun

BrokenFan: Don't even go there boss, Teko was very young when he played for the Ria Stars development, that's when Styles PHumo was still the coach at Manyora, there's nothing wrong with Teko's age, unlike some "youngsters" today, Teko gave us his real age, let the boy shine boss, he deserves it!!!!

As far as I know, Pirates bought Sam Pam Junior from Shooting Stars (Nigeria) after seeing him play for BCC Lions in 1995. BCC Lions lost to Pirates in the last 16 of the Africa Champions League (goals were scored by Oupa Mabuza and Brendon Silent). Sam Pam moved to Ajax Cape Town later. I am not sure may be he joined Ria Stars after playing for Ajax. Anyway why don't KickOff tell us as to how much did Teko won as the KickOff Player of the Season? We know he won R30 000 for being voted by Bucs' fans (us) online, R150 000 for being voted ABSA Premiership Players' Player of the Season and R250 000 for being PSL Player of the Season. Mr. Editor Pls tell us!! This boy is hot! Congra Teko. Invest your money wisely. Football is a very short career.

Teko is 28 years old, boss. Its just that he started playing for Ria Stars at an early age & Sam Pam was still playing at Stars. Theres nothing sinister about Teko`s age.

Yes Teko is Good. He is brilliant but he is overated. Teko still need to prove himself by winning something with Bafana seing that he will never realise the dream of winning an accolade with O. Pirates.

Win the Confed Teko and you will be rated by Me. anyway Shapa Teko Shapa! Siyabangena.

BHAKANIYA, I wonder if you are a true Bhakaniya or you are trying to be funny. How on earth can you make such a statement about Teko and Pirates if you are a true Bhakaniya? This is pathetic. Like it or not Pirates rocks. They are one of the three beautiful teams in South African soccer. Currently they are feared by many.

According to wiki and Bucs Teko was born on December 22 1982 in Soweto Gauteng
This means he is 26

Do not kill me guys, I am just curious. The thing is as far as my memory can cater, Sam Pam played in those days and Ria Stars sold its status in 2002 and that confuses me. I just need clarification...

Let me clarify this once and for all: Sam Pam is now 42 years old. He was older than Teko by 8 years. That makes Teko....ooops!

To Kali Why (Sundowns Remix)

Why Sundowns is not in the Top 8?
Why Mbesuma did not score as much goals as he did in Chiefs?
Answer: When u play with the young stars, u shine as if u r also a young star. When u play with the aged, u play as if u r also aged
Why did we let go of Zuma and Mbesuma?
Answer: Peter Ndlovu and Mazibuku are coming back to Pretoria
Why did we turn a good coach into a scout?
Why did we turn an x-best striker into a PRO?
Why did we have to lie about our player salaries?
Answer: to match Chiefs standard, since they pay thier players more than any other team in Africa
Why did....

Guess what I just found out: Sam Pam Jnr did indeed play with Teko at Ria Stars. When Ria Stars sold its status in 2002. Sam Pam had already retired 2 years earlier.

In conclusion:
Teko played with 3 soccer generations. The 1st Generation included the likes of Guy Roger-Nzeng Sam Pam, etc... The 2nd Generation included the likes of Gerald Raphahlele [Mgababa], Edward Motale,Thabang Lebese etc... The third generation is the current one comprising of the likes of the great Sphiwe Tshabalala, Nkambule, Johannes etc...

Teko has got a lot of experience and talent and he deserves all the awards. He is a true living legend.
