SuperSport United forward Fagrie Lakay says his motivation comes from the likes of Benni McCarthy and Nasief Morris who played their football in top leagues in Europe.
The former Santos attacker has done well in 2018, reviving his career with a loan spell at Ajax Cape Town in the second half of last season. He returned to SuperSport for the start of the new campaign and he’s proving to be a key man in coach Kaitano Tembo’s team.
At 21, Lakay still has a good opportunity to go overseas and he will work extra hard to make sure he follows in the footsteps of McCarthy and Morris, two players he grew up watching.
“If you ask any young player where they want to play, their dream is to go overseas and I am no different. For me it’s just about working hard and the opportunity will come,” Lakay tells KickOff.com.
“There’s Benni McCarthy who played overseas, Nasief Morris as well. There’s quite a few guys who come from similar places in Cape Town, so they motivated me. To see someone who comes from the same place as you achieving that, then I believe that I can too.”
Lakay says football gives players an opportunity to change the lives and situations of their families, as lots of footballers come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“It’s not easy, but that’s why we work hard and play football – to look after our families. Most footballers we work for our families. We always need to look back and take back to the family.”
