Cape Town City’s hard-working midfielder Thabo Nodada has revealed his biggest motivation as he aims to take the next step in his career.

After breaking through at Mpumalanga Black Aces, the diminutive midfielder relocated with the club to Cape Town, and after 11 starts in their first season in the Mother City, he more than doubled that to 25 last season, becoming an indispensable figure in the middle of the park, his high work rate and presence resulting in being named Player of the Season for the club last term.

Nicknamed “Kante” for displaying similar characteristics to the France midfielder, Nodada has continued in the same vein this campaign, featuring in all but one encounter for the club so far while dishing out a number of impressive displays as his stock continues to rise.

And as happy as he is in the Cape, the 23-year-old has revealed his motivation to take his game to the next level.

“I’m happy at Cape Town City, I’m happy with my teammates and the coach,” he said. “But I’d love to go to Europe and test myself against the best, and that’s my daily motivation for me trying to get better and improving my weaknesses, and being the best player I can be.”

When further quizzed about a timeframe to reach his goal, Nodada refused to be specific, but says he was not against this season being his last for the Citizens.

“I don’t have a deadline, but I think I’d be foolish not to use the experience I have around me and the coach and ex-plyers in the PSL who have played overseas,” he said. “I think they’d be able to guide me and move me in the direction of Europe, and me using them as a stepping stone rather than me moving backwards, or to a place where I’m not really going to be able to play like Thabo as I am now.

“So I’m waiting for the right move… I’m not saying this is my last [season at City], but if it is the last, then it’s the last.”

Nodada will be hoping to add a second trophy to City’s cabinet as they prepare for their next fixture, an MTN8 final showdown against SuperSport United in a re-match of last year’s spectacle, taking place at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening.
