Orlando Pirates midfielder Xola Mlambo feels they are more than capable of matching the solid SuperSport United midfield which boasts the likes of Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Dean Furman.
Pirates host Matsatsantsa for the second time this season at Orlando Stadium on Saturday (20h15), but this time they will be competing for three points and not a spot in the next round of a knockout competition.
They played to a 2-2 draw when they met in the MTN8 in August, before SuperSport went on to win via a penalty shootout.
Mlambo had a good game in central midfield that night alongside teammates Ben Motshwari and Linda Mntambo, but Furman and Letsholonyane were also able to make their presence felt in the middle of the park.
Furman got on the scoresheet with a well-taken goal with his left foot from outside the box, while Letsholonyane kept the team ticking with his penetrative passes throughout the 120 minutes.
As they prepare to meet for a second time tomorrow night, Mlambo knows that the midfield battle will be key in deciding who will walk away with the three points.
“It’s going to be a tough battle, because 'Yeye' [Letsholonyane] is experienced. He played on an international level, played for Kaizer Chiefs and won trophies there and he is still playing well right now. There’s Dean Furman, who played abroad and he is the captain of the team and he plays for Bafana Bafana. You look at [Teboho] Mokoena, a young and upcoming player and he is also an international player. So it’s not going to be easy,” Mlambo tells KickOff.com.
But he also makes it clear that the Buccaneers have quality of their own in the engine room.
“We also have a quality team and I feel we strongly have a chance. We have Ben Motshwari who has been doing quite well. There’s Linda Mntambo who is fantastic, we’ve got Meshack Maphangule who is one of the most underrated players.
“There’s the young [Augustine] Mahlonoko, we’ve got Musa [Nyatama] and 'Bibo' [Mpho Makola]. It’s going to be a nice interesting challenge in the middle of the park.”
