UEFA Nations League match report Italy v Poland 07 September 2018
Posted: 7 September 2018
Italy managed to salvage a point against Poland after playing to a 1-1 draw in their UEFA Nations League clash on Friday evening.
Piotr Zielinski should have opened the scoring for Poland in the sixth minute after he was sent through one-on-one with Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma but he fired straight at the Italian shot-stopper.
Federico Bernardeschi had a chance to grab the lead for Roberto Mancini’s charges in the 18th minute with a free-kick from the edge of the box, but he got under his strike and it sailed over the bar.
Zielinski eventually broke the deadlock for Poland five minutes before time with a superb side-footed volley into the near post from a looped cross on the far left.
The Azzurri pushed for an equaliser before the break with a series of attacks, but they could not level the scores as the White Eagles held on to their slender 1-0 lead at the break.
Robert Lewandowski almost doubled the lead for Poland three minutes after the break with a chance at the back post, but the Bayern Munich striker struck his half-volley wide.
The Azzurri were awarded a penalty 12 minutes before time after Federico Chiesa was brought down inside the box. Jorginho stepped up to make it 1-1 from the spot-kick.
Jerzy Brzeczek’s men were threatening to grab the winner with their long balls and set-plays five minutes before time but Italy escaped their onslaught as the encounter ended level.
