The 27-year-old pipped teammate Vincent Pule, with whom he also shared the dressing room at Bidvest Wits, to the accolade.

“It’s a great honour to be nominated for such an award, especially in a time where we haven’t been doing as well as we had planned for as a team," Mlambo told his club's website.

With Pirates enduring a sluggish start to the new season, 'Ten-ten' is confident they will now reflect and bounce back after the ongoing international break.

“We are working hard as a team and always want to do well for each other and the supporters. We finished the season strong last year and we need to build on that," he added.

"We have an international break now where we can focus fully on preparing and look forward to getting back into the swing of things when we resume the league.

“This award has added to my motivation and will be a constant reminder that I need to keep working hard. One thing for sure, if I’m working hard enough to get recognised, it also means I’m pushing for my team to do well at the same time.”
