Mxolisi Macuphu reveals Gavin Hunt's instruction to leave Bidvest Wits training

Bidvest Wits midfielder Mxolisi Macuphu has revealed how he was notified of his late Bafana Bafana call-up for this weekend’s clash against Libya.
Macuphu was called in as a replacement for France-based forward Lebo Mothiba, who pulled out of the squad due to a thigh injury on Tuesday.
With time running out ahead of Saturday’s all-important Africa Cup of Nations Group E qualifier against The Mediterranean Knights, coach Stuart Baxter decided to hand the 29-year-old his maiden invitation to the senior national team.
Having since joined his countrymen in Durban, Macuphu has now reflected upon his reward for his two goals in five matches with his new club thus far.
“The feeling, I cannot describe the feeling but I just need to say that the hard work I’ve been putting in has finally paid off, so I’m really happy to be part of the Bafana squad and to be called up,” Macuphu told SAFA.net.
“My first training session was good. Some of the guys are my teammates [at Wits] and some I’ve played with before so they made it extremely easy for me to do my job.
“But overall it’s been a great feeling, it’s been amazing.”
The Wits winger received the news of his call-up during training at Sturrock Park, and has explained exactly how coach Gavin Hunt informed him of the news.
“I was actually in training because we had a morning session and as I was training coach Gavin called me to one side, and I thought it would be the normal conversation we usually have,” he explained.
“But he then just told me to pack my bags and leave. I was so surprised as to ‘What’s happening now?’ And then he said, ‘No, we’ll see you next week. The national team wants you’.
“So it was a shock really but, as a player, when you work hard you always want to play for Bafana, so it was all good.”
