Atletico Madrid defender Felipe Luis believes the Best FIFA Men's Player award has lost its credibility after Lionel Messi was omitted from the shortlist of nominees.
Messi led FC Barcelona to the league and cup double last season, while he also won the Golden Shoe race with 34 goals.
However, the Argentine failed to be shortlisted for the award, which will be contested by Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Mohamed Salah.
Luis insists Messi will remain the best player in the world, despite not lifting the World Cup or Champions League trophies last season.
"The award is for the best player in the world. For me, today, it's Messi. Just like in previous years," Luis told Globoesporte.
"When he's not there, it loses credibility. It doesn't matter who wins the World Cup or the Champions League. He's the best."
