France & Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe headlines shortlist for Golden Boy award

Posted: 4 September 2018 Time: 12:00

France wonderkid Kylian Mbappe is in pole position to become the first player to retain the Golden Boy award after making the cut on the updated shortlist.

The Golden Boy is an award that is given by sports journalists to a young football player playing in Europe perceived to have been the most impressive during a single calendar year.

Previous winners include Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero, all of whom went on to become world-class talents at the highest level.

However, no player has ever managed to retain the title, something Mbappe will be aiming to do after making the top-60 shortlist.

All nominees must be under the age of 21 and play in a European nation's top tier.
