Kaizer Chiefs coach Giovanni Solinas has provided an update on the progress of defender Teenage Hadebe and explained the absence of Itumeleng Khune on Wednesday night.
Following Amakhosi’s 2-2 draw against Bloemfontein Celtic, it has become increasingly evident that something is not ticking in their defence that let slip a two-goal lead in the space of just two minutes.
Questions have been asked on whether a reshuffle in the central pairing is necessary, but Solinas has been reluctant to give away much regarding possible changes ahead of this weekend’s MTN8 second leg tie.
The Italian tactician did, however, confirm the return of Zimbabwean international Hadebe from his lengthy lay-off due to an ankle injury.
“Teenage played in a friendly [on Wednesday], because the players who weren’t selected [for the Celtic match] played a game at the village in the morning,” explained Solinas.
“He’s doing much better after coming from injury, and now his fitness is coming okay. He’s available for the next game, we will see [if he plays].”
Meanwhile, Solinas explained the absenteeism of Chiefs’ captain, whose place was taken by Bruce Bvuma between the sticks while Brylon Petersen took up the spot on the bench.
Despite conceding two goals in quick succession, Bvuma drew praise from the former Free State Stars mentor, who also rued the unavailability of newly signed goalkeeper Virgil Vries.
“Khune never played because against SuperSport, if you remember, he picked up an injury in the first half after taking a knock,” he added.
“He wasn’t okay to play, which is unbelievable because it is the first time in my career that I lose two goalkeepers at the same time because Virgil is also injured,” he stated.
“But I am happy with the performance of Bruce because, in my opinion, he played a good game.”
Furthermore, without giving any indication of Khune’s availability for Saturday’s fixture against SuperSport United, Solinas assured that the reigning PSL Goalkeeper of the Season would be reporting for Bafana Bafana duty next week.
“But, about Khune, don’t worry. He’s available for the Bafana Bafana. Don’t worry, he’s available,” he concluded.
