Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has painted a bleak picture regarding the future of young centre-back Rivaldo Coetzee.
The Brazilians bought the talented centre-back from Ajax Cape Town last year following his failed medical at Scottish giants Glasgow Celtic, yet the now 21-year-old has yet to kick a ball for Masandawana as he continues to feel pain in his foot following an operation.
“What a good player,” Mosimane said when asked about the defender. “I invested in the 20-year-old, and I see the same investment we put in Keagan [Dolly], Bongani Zungu and Percy Tau. But these things do happen, you can do nothing; we just have to wait. He is kicking a little bit and touching the ball, but then he comes up and says ‘pain … coach, pain’. Sometimes he is okay, but I feel sorry … what a talent hey.”
Mosimane says that he’d do anything to get Coetzee, who has 22 caps for Bafana Bafana and last played for the national team in a 2-1 friendly loss to Zambia last year, back on the field. However, he is unsure when the young defender could be back in action.
“We at Sundowns are patient – it is not easy when you spend so much money on him, but that is football,” he said. “Shame man, and he plays for Bafana, he should be helping us. I told him that he needs to pray a lot, maybe these things can change, you never know. If you guys know anyone who can help, support. We will put him on any flight in the world to get him better. He is 21 years old and can still stay two years without playing to get better, but it’s very sad. Do you think I would go and buy another centre-back when I have him? So that’s it, injuries.
“Bangaly [Soumahoro] also has an injury which has kept him away.”
Wayne Arendse, Ricardo Nascimento, Motjeka Madisha and Mosa Lebusa are the centre-backs currently available for Mosimane, with the first two expected to take to the field in Downs’ must-win CAF Champions League clash against Horoya this evening.
