Bucs to continue Leopards dominance?

Posted: 28 August 2018 Time: 10:30

Orlando Pirates will be putting a 15-year spotless record against Black Leopards on the line when the two sides meet in the Absa Premiership on Tuesday night.

The Buccaneers have enjoyed over a decade-and-a-half of dominance over Lidoda Duvha, who last beat the Soweto giants on 1 February 2003.

Although, this has not been aided by the Venda outfit's fluctuation between the topflight and the second tier over the last 10 years.

Since the 2004/05 season, Pirates have won 11 of their 12 league meetings with Leopards, with their worst result having been a 0-0 stalemate at the Johannesburg Stadium on 8 March 2008.

Coincidentally, at that time Leopards were also under the mentorship of current coach Joel Masutha, who boasted the likes of currently active stars Robert Ng'ambi and Jabulani Maluleke as his disposal.

However, their contrasting form this season might just suggest that Masutha has the upper hand ahead of tonight's meeting at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, with the Thohoyandou-based side having yet to suffer defeat this season.

Leopards have equalled their best Premiership start in the last 15 years, having managed one win and two draws, that currently sees them occupy sixth spot on the log.

Pirates, meanwhile, are on a downward spiral having lost three matches in all competitions on the trot – including their MTN8 first round elimination, with only three points to their names on the league table thus far.

Coach Milutin Sredojevic will be desperately looking to turn things around though, with Bucs fans anticipating a serious title charge following the team's vastly improved second-place finish last season.

Having enjoyed a 10-day break since their defeat to high-flying Bloemfontein Celtic, the Mayfair-based side will have worked extensively on their shortcomings, which include two own-goals and just two goals in four league games.

Nonetheless, it is sure to be an exciting bout between the two sides, with history suggesting a low chance of a draw unfolding.
