KickOff.com looks at Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter's option in goal

Posted: 27 August 2018 Time: 08:30

Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter will announce a squad for a major qualifying campaign match for the first time since the team failed to book themselves a spot at the World Cup in Russia.

After failing to qualify for the FIFA competition, Baxter said he would do away with some of the players who are over the age of 30 and focus on bringing in some of the younger players.

Baxter, who will name his squad on Tuesday for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya on September 8 at Moses Mabhida Stadium, is under pressure to deliver in the qualifying campaign while also introducing fresh faces in the side.

KickOff.com looks at Baxter’s options heading into the crucial qualifier, starting with the goalkeepers.

Baxter will go with three goalkeepers for the matches. Itumeleng Khune is almost certain to be the number one in goal and the question is who the other two goalkeepers will be. Bidvest Wits shot-stopper Darren Keet has kept two clean sheets in four Absa Premiership matches and is, at this stage, the best man to be the second choice.

A player Baxter has worked with at SuperSport United, Ronwen Williams, is the best candidate for the third goalkeeper in the squad, although he has not really taken the opportunity whenever he has donned the national team jersey. Williams, who played a key role in a penalty shootout against Orlando Pirates recently in a MTN8 match, does not have the best of records at the moment. He has conceded six goals in five matches in all competitions, keeping two clean sheets.

Another man who cannot be ruled out of getting a call-up is Pirates’ Siyabonga Mpontshane, who has conceded four goals in as many matches, keeping just one clean sheet.

Should Baxter be looking to bring in a younger goalkeeper who will learn from the old players, Golden Arrows’ Nkosingiphile Gumede, who has kept two clean sheets in four league matches, is an option. The 24-year-old would get valuable experience in the squad if he were picked.
