English Premier League match report Liverpool v Brighton and Hove Albion 25 August 2018

Posted: 25 August 2018 Time: 20:07

Liverpool moved to the top of the English Premier League standings with a 1-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion at Anfield.

For the third successive game, Jurgen Klopp named the same starting line-up, while Fabinho was once again left out of the matchday squad.

The visitors, fresh from beating Manchester United, looked impressive in the early stages of the half, although the Reds did see more of the ball.

Liverpool's dominance eventually paid off as Mohamed Salah broke the deadlock with a neat finish after being picked out Roberto Firmino on 22 minutes.

The Reds pushed for more goals as the half went on, but they were restricted to efforts from distance, none of which were really threatening.

Klopp's men continued from where they left off in the first half and they nearly went ahead on 59 minutes but Joe Gomez's header was saved by goalkeeper Matt Ryan.

In an attempt to secure an equaliser, Chris Hughton introduced Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Jurgen Locadia for the final 15 minutes of the second half.

It was Liverpool who nearly got the next goal in the 86th minute but Alexander-Arnold's left strike sailed inches wide of the upright.

Reds shot-stopper Alisson Becker ensured his side walked away with three points with a superb stop to keep out Pascal Gross' header at the near post.
