New Chippa United coach Eric Tinkler insists he knows what he is getting into working for Siviwe Mpengesi at the Chilli Boys.
Chippa chairman Mpengesi is notoriously trigger-happy when it comes to hiring and firing coaches, as evidenced by Dan Malesela's second dismissal at the club barely three games into the season.
Tinkler, however, is confident he can bring success to the Port Elizabeth-based outfit.
The former Bafana Bafana midfielder has won the Telkom Knockout and MTN8 as a coach with Cape Town City and SuperSport United respectively. He has also twice reached the final of the CAF Confederation Cup with Orlando Pirates and SuperSport respectively, as well as the Nedbank Cup final with the Buccaneers.
“I think obviously my objective is to bring success to the club,” said Tinkler, who left SuperSport in March.
“And I think both parties are happy with what the terms and conditions in the agreement that we made at my appointment. So I hope to fulfill those wishes and demands, not only his wishes but so do it.
“And that’s going to be a target you know.
“To be honest, I don’t look at social media because there’s more negative stuff that goes to social media. I think if you focus on that, you going to let yourself down.”
Tinkler said his immediate task is to help the club move up the table.
“There’s no mandate,” he responded when asked if he has been given one.
“But the mandate is always to ensure that first and foremost we get the club away from where it finds itself right now.
“I’d like to try and finish in the top eight and that’s realistic. I do think it is a good enough squad to try and fight to get into the top eight.”
Tinkler’s first game in charge for Chippa will be against his former club SuperSport on Tuesday at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
